Meritocratic society here? I think not?
It's so disheartening to find out that as one ages, your value goes down and your value for the number of work experiences that you have accumulated throughout your life goes down the drain. When you reach 40 and you have decided to look for a job, you would have to face the upmost number of rejections and probably would stay unemployed for a long time.
And as you get older, you get more and more dispensible to the company and it's always that you have the VIP ticket to retrenchment if your company is not doing well. Managers are getting younger and younger nowadays and they wouldn't want to work with people who are older than them for they feel threatened by someone who has more years of experience than them.
And how about an ex-lecturer who has Masters degree? Stooping down to doing a temporary job only to have been rejected because he/she is over qualified? What nonsense is that? If you are unemployed, that means you need to work in order to survive.
Money. We need money to survive. Doesn't care who the fuck you are or you were. Period.
Don't talk stupid shit like being over-qualified or that the person is not able to adapt to a different field of work just by looking at the work history. In order to survive, humans need to adapt to the new environment, that even means a new job scope as well. How does one qualify to become a HR personel of a company when the company has a 100years of history and they are hiring people who are racists and so against hiring older people?
What? I heard that a clerk can only be in his 20s? Not even late 30s? And when you are 40, you can only work as a housekeeper earning $1K per month? What if you are a white collar and you are only offered a blue collar job?
Wake up. They are our seniors and they definitely have much more work experience than us and can share their knowledge with us. They might also happened to be our parents and they have a family to take care of. How can they take care of fucking you and the family when you are not giving jobs to them?
Picture this: If you are a senior manager at 50, and suddenly the company goes into downsizing, you will get affected and you will find yourself competing with the young people for other positions. Even when you stoop down to get a salary that's half of what you are having now, you will still find difficulty in getting employed because you are old.
That's really a sad thing to know. And even if you are in the government service, you are not sparred the axe either. Early retirement at age 50 is really crap. Who wants you when they claim that you have got no real life working experience except for working internally in the government sector? When you don't keep in touch with the customers out there?
What's the future for us people? It might even be a scene where you can only see young people in their 20s working in shenton way and they shun older people like they see the scariest creature of their lives. The senior people will be hiding in their homes and wouldn't dare to come out.
I better be on my way to getting self-employed before I myself become a victim of age discrimination.
